Chiang Kai-shek’s chess championship game has been described as a “great time” in the history of chess by many, including the US grandmaster David Goffin.
But a group of people in the US and China are claiming it is a fraud.
Chinese players, who are not US citizens, are taking part in the championship game.
They say they were not invited to attend, and are therefore not entitled to compensation.
Their opponents, who also are not Chinese citizens, claim they were invited to participate but that the Chinese government has rejected the invitation.
In response to the criticism, Chinese Chess Federation (CCF) spokesman Li Bingwen said the US was making up stories to try to discredit the game.
“The tournament is run by the US Chess Federation and it has been decided that no compensation is payable to the US chess players,” he said.

“We are not making any allegations,” ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said.
“However, we are aware that the tournament is not going to be fair and the US will not be compensated.”
The tournament, which takes place at the US National Chess Center in Augusta, Georgia, is being organised by the Chinese Chess Association.
The US government says the tournament has been “discriminated against Chinese chess players”.
“We strongly urge the Chinese federation to take the necessary steps to ensure that the US Federation will not unfairly disadvantage Chinese chessplayers,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“China’s chess players have always taken a fair and impartial approach to the international chess competition, which we respect and support.”
“The US Chess Foundation has made an excellent effort to work with the Chinese chess federation to improve the fair play of chess.”
“This is the first time in history that a chess tournament has featured Chinese chessmen.
The tournament will feature a mix of national and international players from around the world.”
China is the world’s top-ranked chess grandmaster.
The World Chess Federation has rejected claims it is promoting chess fraud.
“Chess is a game of skill, not chance,” the federation said in an online statement.
