NEW YORK, N.Y. — A New York City chess player was arrested Friday on charges of murder in the death of a 3-month-old infant who died in a Queens hospital on July 14.
Police say the child, whose name has not been released, died after his mother was taken to the hospital after the baby’s father was not at home.
Police said the mother and the father were in a car in the 1000 block of North Charles Street, about a block from the New York Public Library.
The father was allegedly intoxicated and unable to get out of the car.
Police said he and his wife were driving when the child’s father got out of their car and started to fight with the mother.
The mother was allegedly shot in the back of the head, according to police.
She was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where she died, police said.
The suspect, 23-year old Benjamin Michael Schmid, was arrested in Queens and charged with first-degree murder.
Schmid was arraigned Friday and posted a $50,000 bond.
The prosecutor told the court the charges stem from a violent fight at the home.
